Additional Information Felix Schaffgotsch, an Austrian nobleman, "discovered" Sun Valley and prompted Averell Harriman to build the ski resort in the 1930s. Schaffgotsch was the first ski instructor at Sun Valley through 1939, but World War II forced him to return to Austria, where he died on the battlefield in 1942
