Description |
Scan of a photo of the "Schematic drawing of power network used in supplying Arco, Idaho, with electricity from the Borax reactor at the Atomic Energy Commission's National Reactor Testing Station. Arco is served by two different lines of the Utah Power and Light Company. An old, unused section of power line (represented by dotted line in drawingt)connects the NRTS with one of these lines at a point between Arco and Howe. Throwing a switch at the NRTS (lower magnified circle on drawing) cut Borax off conventional power and lwt it provide electricity to Arco's alternate line. Another awitch (upper magnified circle) cut Arco off conventional power and onto nuclear power. Dotted line at Borax represents circuitry which enabled reactor to run on its own power, a step preliminary to taking over line load. photo number 55-2259" |

Additional Information |
Utah Power & Light Company, with a mobile substation, participated in the early experiments at the National Reactor Testing Station (today the Idaho National Laboratory). On December 20, 1951, the Experimental Breeder Reactor-1 produced the first electricity from a nuclear reaction. On July 17, 1955, the BORAX-III reactor provided electric lighting to the nearby town of Argo--the first community in the world ever to be lit by electricity generated by nuclear power. |
