Additional Information |
Starboard side view of the New Orleans class heavy cruiser USS Vincennes (CA-44) sailing in formation with other U.S. ships off Guadalcanal following the invasion of the Solomon Islands on 7 August 1942. The ship is in dapple Measure 12 camouflage scheme. The USS Vincennes, along with sister ships USS Astoria (CA-34) and USS Quincy (CA-39) would be sunk in a night surface action with Japanese warships off Savo Island on 9 August 1942. This is likely the last photo taken of the ship before it was lost in battle. |
