There were two episodes of mineral replacement or fossilization recorded in the Cleveland-Lloyd dinosaur bones: the first represented by an inner, white layer of sparry calcite lining the marrow cavity in this specimen and the second a layer of pale, amethyst quartz crystals that grew inward from the walls of cavities as seen in some geodes.
