Title Burn Scar, Floodplain
Creator Doug Tolman
Description This piece was displayed as part of Doug Tolman's MFA exhibition "Generative Spaces". "Above the ever-expanding tourist haven of Moab lies a large burn scar. Covering multiple drainages in the La Sal Mountains, the fire was started in the summer of 2021 by campers on public land, and quickly expanded through to cover nearly 9,000 acres. The following summer, 2022 saw a weather system with increasingly large rain events each afternoon. The lack of vegetation to slow erosion led to flash floods in these drainages several afternoons in a row, like clockwork. Burn Scar, Floodplain is a window into the conversation between Burn Scar and Floodplain. Igneous (UIU) and Coniferous Flood Erratics (UOU) seat themselves in front of a looped, 2- minute film that follows a storm as it builds over the Pack Creek drainage on August 15, 2022,; before following the water down the drainage." Statement from the artist. / UIU; From an unknown watershed, made of inorganic material, unaltered by humans. UOU; From an unknown watershed, made of organic materials, unaltered by humans.
