Additional Information |
Image was scanned from color slide. Caption information is from photographer's notes on slide. Note: Arita (有田町, Arita-machi) is a town located in Nishimatsuura District, Saga, Japan. It is known for producing Arita porcelain, one of the traditional handicrafts of Japan. Each year, the town hosts the largest ceramic fair in Western Japan, the Arita Ceramic Fair. This event includes thousands of stores and stalls lining the six-kilometer main street. Kyūshū (九州, lit. "Nine Provinces") is the third largest island of Japan and most southwesterly of its four main islands.--Wikipedia. Note: Kakiemon (Japanese: 柿右衛門) wares were produced at the factories of Arita, Saga Prefecture, Japan from the mid-17th century. The Japanese potter Sakaida Kakiemon (酒井田柿右衛門, 1596-1666) is popularly credited with being one of the first in Japan to discover the secret of enamel decoration on porcelain. Kakiemon is sometimes used as a generic term describing wares made in the Arita factories using the characteristic Kakiemon overglaze enamels and decorative styles. --Wikipedia. |
