Description Ed Mayer discusses his family's background with relatives working in the sugar beet and mining industry. He talks about growing up on the west side of Salt Lake City in section housing. He recounts the cultural traditions of his family. Mayer enrolled at the University of Utah and was drafted into the military. He also discusses relearning Spanish when he was in college and getting his PHD from the University of Missouri in Latin American Literature and Culture. Mayer talks about being recruited to teach at the University of Utah and the Chicano Studies program.
