Guadalupe to the U Day was designed to expose underrepresented 1st through 4th graders in the Glendale neighborhood to the idea that higher education is an attainable option for them. Guadalupe to the U day served many purposes, one being to draw the connection between current curriculum in the classroom at Guadalupe schools to education and knowledge that will be used in education and careers later in the student's lives. By tying in classroom curriculum into the events of the day, we hoped students would see a real world application and realize that what they were currently learning would be applicable in later life and college was important to reach these future goals. Also, by using this curriculum they would not lose a day in the classroom in place of a "fieldtrip" day. Another main objective of Guadalupe to the U day was to excite students about attending college. Those few who did have knowledge about college only knew the classroom side and had little or no knowledge about the entire college experience such as clubs, organizations, research, service, and fun. We wanted to expose students to these aspects as well. |
