Description |
Price, Utah on April 25 or 26, 1904. Striking Carbon County coal miners who had been arrested April 24, 1904 and their guards, some of whom had been deputized by the Carbon County sheriff. Others were guards of the Utah Fuel Company. The guards were led by C. W. 'Doc' Shores, chief detective of Utah Fuel Company. Mark P. Braffet, Utah Fuel Company attorney, and Carbon County Sheriff Wilcox. The building in the background is the implement shed of the Emery County Mercantile Company, located across the street from the old Carbon County Courthouse. The third person from the left is the lower portion of the image in the dark clothes is Charles DeMolli, one of the organizers of the 1903-1904 Carbon County coal strike. Man on the rock pile at the far left is C. L. 'Gunplay' Maxwell, well-known western outlaw. Within a month of his release from jail for his part in the Springville, Utah bank robbery, the Utah Fuel Company hired him as a mine guard during the strike. To his left is Mart P. Braffe. |
