In Shakespeare's The Sonnets we follow one man's journey of self discovery through each of the poems. The Sonnets are a drama in which the poet's odyssey in search of the meaning of immortality in life and love unfold. As in life, the sonnets do not flow with progressive continuity from one revelation to the next, but are dynamic in their progression, constantly in flux with new and expanding discoveries. It is important to follow this dynamic progression of the sonnets in order to grasp the complexity and continuity of the flow of ideas running through each of them. In this way we can follow the poet's movement from the lofty idealism found in the love of a young man to the seasoned, comfortable realism found in the love of a mature woman. We can also trace the development of the poet's perception of appearance and reality in life and how his perception of the appearance of reality and immortality changes as his experience broadens. |
