Description The visual system in the hwnan brain is comprised by the occipital obes, and nearby parietal and temporal cortices. The region can be divided into superior (dorsal) and inferior (ventral) components, using the calcarine fissure as the point of demarcation. This division reflects the considerable functional segregation of the region: the dorsal component ( occipitaVoccipitoparietal) is specialized for decoding where things are, while the ventral component (occipitaVoccipitotemporal) is specialized for decoding what things are (Ungerleider & Mishkin, 1982). The focus here is on the ventral visual system, and on several important neuropsychological disorders that occur with damage to this region.
