Description |
Controversy concerning the mechanism, nature, nosology, semiology and existence of a toxic optic neuropathy caused by tobacco has been debated for many years. For much of this time, the designation ""tobacco-alcohol amblyopia"" has obfuscated these issues. It is our opinion that although tobacco probably can cause or contribute to a toxic optic neuropathy, alcohol is not a primary or contributing factor, and the two do not exert any toxic effect in concert. If ever a medical term deserved to be expunged, it is ""tobacco-alcohol amblyopia."" |
