Subject Neuroprotection; Optic Neuritis; Multiple Sclerosis; Visual Function; Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
Description Results from the Optic Neuritis Treatment Trial (ONTT) indicate that some degree of persistent visual loss occurs regardless of current therapeutic intervention in acute demyelinating optic neuritis (ON). Permanent deficits result from irreversible loss of myelin and axonal degeneration. Identification and testing of agents that protect axons and neurons, and defining the therapeutic 'window of opportunity' within which neuroprotective agents will be most effective, are essential next steps in improving outcomes.
