These six books were produced between May 1999 and November 2000. The process of making these books became inherently involved with the process of formulating the story. The story is my own story. These books that I have written, designed, illustrated, printed, and bound are made of my experiences. The time that I spent outside of the darkroom and studio became my subject matter. The life that I have been living in Salt Lake City, UT and driving twice across America during the past two years has been my primary resource for research. I have made records on film and paper, developed stories from these records, and produced a book to tell each story as it should be told. For every book, part of the whole was previsualized. The other parts responded to the telling o f the story in turn. I would observe something that interested me, become more involved with the idea, and gradually flesh out the concept behind it. As I developed my intent in producing the book, the necessary format for the conveyed information would manifest itself. It was my foremost intent to tell these stories honestly and bind these ideas according to how they asked to be bound. |
