Norman Schatz, MD: Comedic Genius

No one in the field of neuro-ophthalmology could be as smart-and-funny as Norman Schatz, MD. Drawing on the enormous and diverse patient population of the Wills Eye Institute, Jefferson Medical College, he developed an unmatchable repertoire. If you had seen an intriguing case, he had seen three of them-in the previous week! With his residents and fellows, he published accounts of virtually every strange clinical phenomenon. His weekly conferences at Wills, in which he would imitate accents and pantomime medical manifestations, were standing room only. Many of the leaders of present-day neuroophthalmology got there because they wanted to be like Schatz.
