Description Throughout the ages, malnutrition has been known to have a powerful impact upon the developing fetus. Laboratory studies which induce poor nutrition in the pregnant mother reveal that throughout all levels of development, inadequate nutrition may affect the unborn fetus; from the beginning cell division, up to post natal behavioral patterns. At an International Symposium, in November 1974, sixty scientists in the field of nutrition gathered, exchanged information, and generally agreed that, "malnutrition during gestation, lactation, or both has adverse effects upon the offspring with regard to birth weight, mortality, morbidity, growth and performance, both physical and mental."
