Description Boar killed during hunt for food while in the Burghausengen Forest.
Abstract Hungry soldiers and citizens had a feast on the boar killed by Phil Andersen in the Burghausengen Forest. Phil Andersen wrote "In Burghausengen, we were hungry. It was October, and someone asked about forming a hunting party. We liked the idea. Our commanding officer went to the village Burgomeister (mayor) and requested permission to conduct a boar hunt in the forest. He agreed - as long as we shared the game with the villagers...The citizens in the town were also hungry, and our C.O. agreed to share any kill with the citizens there. He didn't know if we would see any game or not, but it was a welcome diversion for any of us who volunteered to participate. We formed a hunting party and approached the forest, shoulder to shoulder. As we were walking through the forest, I heard a snorting noise and some rustling in the underbrush. I raised my rifle and called out. I immediately saw this HUGE, black, furry thing speeding straight toward me! I thought it was a bear! I pointed my gun at the charging animal, put my finger on the trigger and held it for a second or two. I sidestepped him and shot. I felt the wind of the boar's body brush by me. He fell dead a few feet away from my right boot...Wow! I had killed a 250-pound wild boar!"
