Tomotsu Murayama was a journalist and reporter for a Tokyo newspaper and a major supporter of boy scout program in Japan. His Tokyo boy scouts contributed cherry trees to the garden. Agriculture rules prevented them from entering US, they were destroyed and TM almost lost his home trying to pay for costs. HYK spearheaded a campaign to raise money from SLC community. They raised enough to not only cover costs, but, send tents & camp gear to Japan scouts. Saved TM public disgrace & financial ruin (he had a wife and 8 kids). There are personal letters in AK's collection describing the entire event. Reading about it moved me to tears. That photo was taken not long after the garden was completed. Over the years, vandals have destroyed various parts of the garden, probably the gate was one of the first items to be vandalized. (information from Una Kasai |
