Description PION (posterior ischemic optic neuropathy) is retrobulbar ION (ischemic optic neuropathy) involving the optic nerve and or optic chiasm, but the optic disc is not swellen. PION is much less common than AION (anterior ION) and should be differentiated from any retrobular optic nerve pathology including compressive, inflammatory, and infiltrative optic neuropathies.
