Description The members of the Herpesviridae family are large, DNA-containing, enveloped viruses. The name ""herpe"" is derived from a Greek word for the spreading skin eruption that is caused by some of these viruses and from the French word herper, meaning ""to creep."" About 80 herpesviruses infect animals, and 8 regularly infect humans: 1. Herpes simplex virus type 1 (human herpesvirus type 1, HSV-1); 2. Herpes simplex virus type 2 (human herpesvirus type 2, HSV-2); 3. Varicella-zoster virus (human herpesvirus type 3, VZV); 4. Epstein-Barr virus (human herpesvirus type 4, EBV); 5. Cytomegalovirus (human herpesvirus type 5, CMV); 6. Human herpesvirus type 6 (HHV-6, B-lymphotropic virus); 7. Human herpesvirus 7 (HHV-7); 8. Human herpesvirus type 8 (HHV-8, Kaposis sarcoma associated herpesvirus). A ninth herpesvirus, simian herpes B virus (B virus, Herpesvirus simiae), usually infects monkeys, although it occasionally infects humans and produces significant neurologic disease.
