Creator Paul W. Brazis, MD, Neil R. Miller, MD
Affiliation (PWB) Mayo Clinic; (NRM) Professor of Ophthalmology, Johns Hopkins University
Subject Infectious Diseases; Viruses; Virus Diseases; Paramyxoviridae
Description The paramyxoviruses once were considered to belong to the family Myxoviridae; however, they were subsequently separated from the orthomyxoviruses because their genomes are not segmented, as are the genomes of the orthomyxoviruses, and because they use a molecular strategy for both gene expression and replication that more closely resembles that of the rhabdoviruses than that of the orthomyxoviruses.
