Description Positive visual symptoms can be divided into formed and unformed types. Unformed visual phenomena including flashes, flickers and geometric shapes are termed photopsias or phosphenes. These terms are sometimes used interchangeably. The use of phosphene is sometimes limited to luminous sensations caused by direct stimulation of the eyes whereas photopsias can arise in other parts of the visual system as well.
