| Description |
Agent Byrnes presents his account of a case involving leasing grazing lands to white cattlemen. Byrnes claims that Mormon cattlemen failed to pay for the use of Indian lands and, in response, the Utes formed a council to appeal to higher authorities. In response to Agent Byrnes' demand for payment, the cattlemen offered to pay $1 per head in the herd. When Byrnes refused to accept the offer, the cattlemen attempted to tarnish Byrnes' reputation among the Indians on the reservation. Byrnes provides notes from the council meeting |
