Zion National Park in southern Utah is famed for its towering canyon walls and vivid red rocks. The canyons and mesas of Zion were originally preserved as a National Monument in 1909 and fell under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service upon the agency's formation in 1916. Since then, Zion has become one of the crown jewels of the National Park system and a major attraction for the state of Utah. Reflecting its increasing popularity as a tourist destination, the park has experienced dramatic increases in visitation in recent years, jumping from 2.6 million visitors in 2010 to 4.3 million visitors in 2016. |
