Description This descriptive study (1) identified and compared the stress levels and coping mechanisms of 24 parents of pediatric heart transplant patients and pediatric patients with chronic heart disease and, (2) identified ways health care providers can assist these parents in the coping process. Both groups of parents frequently reported stress involving the family. There was no difference between the groups concerning stress. Increased stress was found in families from rural areas and families with adolescents. Parents most frequently utilized coping mechanisms involving the family, religion, and talking with others. No difference was found between the two groups regarding their coping mechanisms. Six themes were identified how health care providers can assist these families in the coping process including Communication, Empathy, Information, Listens/Trust, Availability, and Honesty. Parents also reported the need for more information, consistent health care providers, emotional support, and talking with other parents in a similar situation.
