Description Evaluation of inservice education provided for nurses in a hospital setting is of concern to Nursing; educators. This study evaluated an intra-aortic balloon review course provided for critical care nurses. The three-hour course was designed according to “propositions of learning†suggested by a Nursing; educator-theorist. The subjects consisted of fourteen registered nurses who attended an intro-aortic balloon review course. A one-group pretest-posttest design was used. There was a skills test and a written test. Each test was a criterion-referenced evaluation of Nursing; competency in relation to the intra-aortic balloon pump. The study demonstrated that the learning proposition could be operationalized in a Nursing; inservice program. There was a significant increase in posttest scores over pretest scores, suggesting that learning was associated with the course. Demographic variables did not significantly affect pretest scores, nor the amount of improvement in scores.
