In February of 1974, a Joint Statement of Principles was signed between the united States and Panama which may have opened the last chapter in more than seventy years of almost absolute united States rule in the Panama Canal Zone. The Statement, reflecting Current united States-Panamanian policy, agrees to abrogate the 1903 treaty with its sovereignty in perpetuity clauses and to "promptly" terminate United States jurisdiction over the Canal Zone. The statement also reflects a dramatic liberalization of traditional United States policy toward the Republic of Panama. |
