Description Alzheimer's disease accounts for about 60 per cent of cases of dementia, cerebrovascular for 15 per cent and neoplasms in midline or silent areas for 5 per cent. Neurodegenerative disorders such as Pick's disease, Jacob-Creutzfeld disease, infections including neurosyphilis and AIDs, toxins, metabolic disorders and vasculitis contribute to a growing list of causes of dementia. The etiology of dementia is unknown in as many as 5 per cent of cases after postmortem examination.
