Caption on Slide Okumura Masanobu "The Tanabata Festival" large oban, tan-e, Pub. Komatsuya, c. 1710's, Accoutrements of the festival with 2 magpies (assistants to lovers - above in the Milky Way (Sep. by it)- they meet (over) once each year helped by the magpies. Children rise early on festival day, collect morning dew to prep ink & write poems on strips of paper to attach to bamboo poles to pray for proficiency in calligraphy & sawing.
Additional Information Image was scanned from color slide. Note: "Okumura Masanobu (1686-1764) was a Japanese print designer, book publisher, and painter. He also illustrated novelettes and in his early years wrote some fiction. At first his work adhered to the Torii school, but later drifted beyond that. He is a figure in the formative era of ukiyo-e doing early works on actors and bijinga, 'beautiful women.'"--Wikipedia
