The 2024 Better U Survey for the Operating Room at the University of Utah Orthopaedic Center identified key staff concerns, with 69% identifying a lack of open and honest communication and 54% reporting a lack of recognition. As a result, leadership implemented the IHI Framework for Improving Joy in Work (Perlo et al., 2017) and conducted What Matters to You? (WMTY) conversations with the intent to improve communication and create staff-led initiatives to improve recognition of staff. Feedback from WMTY conversations identified areas needing improvement that most often related to Daily Improvement and Recognition and Rewards two of the nine IHI Framework's identified categories for improvement. In response the team initiated the installation of a shout-out board to enhance appreciation and recognition for team members who give extra effort in the workplace. While still in the early stages of implementation, an increased level of communication and positivity has been noted along with enhanced team camaraderie and cohesiveness. The IHI framework and WMTY method have improved teamwork and positive attitudes through recognition. Informal observations suggest improved communication and empowered staff who are willing to bring concerns and solutions forward for resolution. Leaders have also been empowered with the tools needed to listen, understand, and engage employees in positive change. Citation: Perlo J, Balik B, Swensen S, Kabcenell A, Landsman J, Feeley D.
