Description Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic inflammatory disease of unknown cause that may affect the skin, joints, kidneys, lungs, nervous system, serous membranes, and other organs of the body. Patients with SLE have distinct immunologic abnormalities, particularly antinuclear antibodies (ANAs). Because of the diffuse, multisystemic nature of this disease, the American Rheumatism Association committee developed a set of diagnostic criteria in 1975, which were revised in 1982.
