Compliance among adolescents with asthma: instrument development

This thesis is a pretest of Adolescent Compliance Questionnaire (ACQ), an instrument that was developed in Finland to measure factors related to patient compliance among adolescent who have diabetes. This purpose was to test ACQ among American adolescents who have asthma to determine if the instrument would be useable among this group. ACQ was translated to English and formatted to match issues pertinent to asthma self-care. Twelve adolescents completed the questionnaire then answered interview questions regarding its contents. ACQ was thorough in assessing self-care issues pertinent to adolescent with asthma; however, not all of the self-care items were applicable for every participant. In addition, ACQ was brief and easily understood by the adolescents who participated. Additional testing of ACQ will be necessary to determine statistical significance of items contained in the instrument and ACQs value in measuring compliance among American adolescent with asthma.
