Collection Overview +/-
Collection Inventory +/-Biographical Note/Historical Note +/-During the post-war era the Westminster College Student Council (WCSC) dealt with issues such as fundraising, veterans' benefits, student funds and concerns and parking. Many committees working under the council sold refreshments at activities and athletic events in order to raise money for activities. Most social events offered special benefits and discounts to returning veterans. Several actions to improve student concerns where taken by the council, such as the purchase of a clock for the student lounge, imposing faculty and student parking policies, and working with the administration on the use of student fees. From 1945-1956, the council consisted of a student body president, Vice-President, secretary and treasurer as well as editors of the newspaper and yearbook, class officers and various other appointed positions. The council met regularly either in the chapel, or in Converse Hall, two to three times each month during the school year. The council only called special meetings to discuss specific, immediate issues. The council's main concerns dealt the planning and preparation of social activities, the approval of clubs and organizations, the approval of athletic letters, the creation and elimination of specific committees related to the council and minor campus issues. Content Description +/-The minutes of the Westminster College Student Council are contained in 2 volumes. The first volume is a small spiral notebook which begins on October 12, 1945 and ends on May 31, 1946. The first entry suggests that there are no prior minutes. The second volume is a black, metal bound minute book which begins on September 16, 1948 and ends on May 8, 1956. Both volumes contain the minutes taken at student council meetings. However, the second volume also includes budget reports, correspondence between the student council and associated committees, as well as passed resolutions to the constitution of the council. Each volume contains supplemental materials such as notes, receipts and correspondence with specific people or organizations. The material included within the collection mainly describes social events and organizations hosted by the student council, and the business surrounding the facilitation of each activity.
