Description |
Photograph of a printed photograph, by C. W. Carter, of the Utah Council House building with people standing around. Council House was Utah's first public building. It was built from 1849 to about 1851. It stood on the South West Corner of Main Street and South Temple Street across from Temple Square where the Gateway Tower West now stands and is occupied by the US Bank. It served many functions including the Territorial legislature, library, courts and other purposes. It burned down in 1883 in a fire that began next door at the Clausen Transfer Depot and was spread when the fire reached wagons loaded with dynamite that exploded. |
