Utes pose in front of tipis and the sandstone rock formations of the Garden of the Gods. The Ute women wear dresses trimmed with elk's teeth, beading or fringe, and shawls. One girl wears a white dress; the other children wear native dress. The Ute men wear feather bonnets, hair pipe breastplates, fringed and beaded leggings and vests. One holds a ceremonial shield. Buckskin Charlie, with a mustache, stands near center and holds a sheath of white feathers. His wife, To-wee, stands in the front and holds the hands of two girls. She wears a feather bonnet. Chipeta, widow of Chief Ouray, sits in the front row near Buckskin Charlie, between two girls in dresses decorated with elk's teeth. |
