Death of retinal ganglion cells is the final common pathway underlying virtually all disease of the optic nerve, including anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, optic neuritis, and compressive optic neuropathy. The mechanism by which retinal ganglion cells die after optic nerve injury includes apoptosis, a type of programmed cell death. |
