Farm Equipment-Harvester P.35

This picture was taken in the late 1890's or the early 1900's at Hinckley, Millard County, Utah. It shows men at work threshing wheat. The equipment consists of a steam engine and a separator. The engine was fired with wood, which produced steam from a water-filled boiler. The steam made the pistons work, which turned a large pulley with a belt attached to it and the separator. The separator cleaned the chaft from the wheat. The wheat came pouring out of a funnel at the side of the separator. The chaft had to be stacked like alfalfa. The engine could travel on its own power, but the separator had to be towed. The outfit was owned by William Brown Alldredge, a Utah Pioneer of 1867. It was the first and only outfit of its kind in western Millard County at the time. William Alldredge was an energetic man who planted the first fruit orchard in Hinckley and had the first sewing machine (and perhaps the first piano) in Hinckley. He also donated five acres of his land to build the first LDS Church in Hinckley. On engines: Ted Davis and son Lee. Left, on coop, George Talbot.
