Description |
IRONTON OLDTIMERS - "We made things hum in those days," agree Ironton plant "pioneers", from left, J. Martin Kimber, Provo, veteran coke plant operator; L.F. Rains, retired industrialist and key figure in Ironton's founding and construction, and A.E. (Bert) Terry, who rose from Ironton laborer in 1924 to general superintendent of Geneva Works, from which he is now retired. The occasion was the 18th annual Ironton 20-Year Club dinner, a club to which everyone who has worked 20 years or more at Ironton belongs. Nearly 100 Ironton oldtimers and Geneva Works executives swapped yarns Monday night at the annual affair. Mr. Rains, now a management consultant with offices in Salt Lake, was chief guest of honor. He is credited with interesting West Coast capital into forming the old Columbia Steel Corporation and building Ironton in 1923. Columbia Steel Corporation was purchased by U.S. Steel in 1929. |
