Description Major advances in the detection, treatment, and control of essential hypertension have been made since the early 1970s. Studie, such as the Hypertension Detection and Follow-up Program and the Framingham Study, have clearly defined the risk of high blood pressure for increasing cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Further controlled clinical trials have shown bnefits in treating milder levels of hypertension and have redefined the criteria for diagnosing borderline (Diastolic Blood Pressure of DBP of 85-89 mm Hg) and mild (DBP of 90-104 mm Hg) hypertension. Early detection and treatment have reduced the incidence of complications associated with hypertension, such as stroke, congestive heart failure, left ventricular hypertrophy, and further progression of hypertension. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the dose response and safety profile of 5, 10 and 20 mg of nitrendipine compared to placebo when given once daily in the treatment of mild hypertension. The study was also designed to assess the duration of blood pressure lowering effect following a single daily dose of nitrendipine. This study will help to determine the lowest effective dose of nitrendipine and if once daily dosing is appropriate.
