The museum was first founded in 1974 and its building opened in 1978...at University Towne Centre in [La Jolla, within the northern city limits of] San Diego."--Wikipedia. Note: "KEISUKE SERIZAWA: A Living Treasure of Japan was held Jun 23, 1979 - Oct 14, 1979. It was guest-curated, designed and installed by Mr. Serizawa and members of his atelier in Japan...The opening reception, attended by Mr. Serizawa and his family, was filmed by the National Geographic for a special program that aired in 1981. The Mingei International documentary publication included text by Lennox Tierney, Curator of Asian Art at the San Diego Museum of Art."--Mingei International Museum website. They usually have one or more vertical slits cut from the bottom to nearly the top of the fabric, allowing for easier passage or viewing.
