The Utah track and field team wrapped up the first day of action at the MPSF Championships will several impressive performances. The Utes were led by the ninth place performance of the distance medley relay team. Competing in the last event of the night, the Utah distance medley just missed scoring a team point by one-hundredth of a second. The relay comprised of Sadie Wassum, Mesa Weidle, Caitie Faust, and Dakota Grossman finished just behind the University of Arizona with a time of 11:47.93. The pentathlon featured two Utes competing. Competing in a total of five events, true freshman Lauren McCluskey finished 14th overall with a total of 3159 points. Sophomore Madison Lanford placed 17th with 2880 points. In the 60-meter dash, junior Alissa recorded a new season-best time of 7.78 seconds to earn 27th overall. True freshman Lauren McCluskey represented the Utes in the long jump, claiming 18th after leaping a distance of 16 feet, 8.5 inches. Sophomore Shaylen Crook led the charge in the 5,000-meter, clocking a time of 17:18.24 en-route to an 28th place finish. Accompanying Crook was redshirt senior Kate Stringfellow and Jocelyn Todd. Stringfellow recorded a time of 17:20.25 for 21st followed by Todd in 23rd. At the conclusion of the first day of action the University of Oregon is in first place with 32 team points followed by Arizona State and USC tied for second with 23 points. FINAL: Sophomore Sarah Feeny's third-place performance in the mile highlighted the Utah women's track and field team at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships on Saturday. The Utes finished 14th at the meet with nine team points. The highlight of the day came in the mile when Feeny clocked a time of 4:39.48. Close to a personal best, this time was fast enough for Feeny to capture third overall and earn six points for the Utes. Accompanying Feeny near the front of the pack for the majority of the race was sophomore Sadie Wassum, who ran a five-second personal best time of 4:52.92. Nikki Rietz finished in 26th (5:02.57), followed by Dakota Grossman in 27th (5:02.64). Feeny returned to the track to compete in the 3,000 with only an hour and half rest in between. Feeny just missed scoring for her second time of the day, placing ninth overall with a time of 9:24.55. Redshirt sophomore Hannah McInturff earned 19th with a time of 9:38.01, followed by Becky Sarmiento in 31st with a 6 second personal best (9:53.69). Four other Utes competed in the event including: Jocelyn Todd (39th), Shaylen Crook (40th), Kate Stringfellow (48th), and Dana Snell (51st). The 800-meter run featured the second Utah athlete scoring a team point for the Utes. Redshirt senior Ali Eisenbeiss recorded a personal-best time of 2:07.12 to earn sixth and score three points. Allison Aafedt claimed 21st with a time of 2:13.38 and Christine Van Brocklin placed 25th in 2:14.54. True freshmen Caitie Faust and junior Makenzie Clark also competed, finishing 30th and 33rd, respectively. The 400-meter race showcased junior Alissa Atisme and sophomore Mesa Weidle. Finishing 25th overall was Atisme with a time of 56.86 seconds. Weidle finished with a time of 59.42 seconds for 38th. Rounding out the day of competition was the 4x400 relay team. The relay featured Atisme, Van Brocklin, Aafedt and Eisenbeiss returning to the track to record a time of 3:46.97 to earn ninth overall. Competing in the high jump was freshman Eliza Hansen, who cleared 5 feet and a half inch, finishing tied for 25th. Mackenzie Arnold finished 18th in the long jump (16 feet, 8.5 inches). The Utes finished the MPSF Championships in 16th place with a combined total of six points. The overall winner was Oregon with 68 points followed USC (47 points) and Washington State (38.50 points). |
