Image was scanned from color slide. "Folding fans (扇子 Japanese "sensu", Chinese: "shànzi", Korean 부채 buchae) continue to be important cultural symbols and popular tourist souvenirs in East Asia. Geisha of all types (but maiko most often) use folding fans in their fan dances as well, and the Korean fan dance of buchaechum is very popular. Japanese fans are made of paper on a bamboo frame, usually with a design painted on them. In addition to folding fans (ōgi),[9] the non-bending fans (uchiwa) are popular and commonplace.[10] The fan is primarily used for fanning oneself in hot weather."--Wikipedia |
