"Cherry blossoms on dark and light streams, late 19th-early 20th century, stencil, thrust-carving with silk webbing...The tie-bars in this stencil appear as breaks in the incised white lines in the dark streams and as short bars linking the lines in the light streams." |
Additional Information |
Image was scanned from color slide. Image needs to be rotated 90% to left for correct orientation/view. Image of object can also be found in: Carved Paper: The Art of Japanese Stencil by Susanna Kuo, p. 86. Note: "Katagami...or Ise-katagami is the Japanese art of making paper stencils [to be used in the process of putting designs on textiles]. The art is traditionally centered around the city of Ise in Mie Prefecture. Multiple layers of thin washi paper are bonded with a glue extracted from persimmon, which makes a strong flexible brown colored paper. The paper is cut with a combination of knives and punches. Four principal cutting techniques are used."--Wikipedia. Note: "Katazome...is a Japanese method of dyeing fabrics using a resist paste applied through a stencil."--Wikipedia. |
