Description Gilsonite Miners stand by a small gilsonite vein with a derrick placedabove the opening. Bags of gilsonite are stacked next to the mine. Gilsonite is found in the Uintah Basin in the Bookcliffs area in verticle veins. Gilsonite is a black asphalt-like hydrocarbon that is used for many products. The Uintah Basin is the only place in the world that gilsonite is found in commercial quanities. It is still being mined at the American Gilsonite Company in Bonanza, Utah.
