Biographical Note/Historical Note +/-David Fairbanks and other settlers erected a dam at the north end of a natural hollow in 1851. The reservoir they created served the irrigation needs of the community from that time to the present. In fact, Salem's culinary system has the potential of supplying water to more residents than currently live in the community. Content Description +/-In addition to the articles of incorporation for the Salem Pond Irrigation Company, the collection also contains a brief history of Salem, Utah from 1851 to the present. There are two documents which record the purchase of town sites near the reservoir and another which documents the water rights of the company. The company, one of the oldest in the state, failed to preserve any minutes which existed prior to 1902. The collection does include a fairly complete set of minutes from 1902 to 1979. The organization is still active and continues to use water from the Salem Reservoir.
