Fish springs station: A preliminary report of archaeological investigations in Western Utah

This is the preliminary report of archaeological testing conducted during June of 1998 at the Fish Springs Station site (421B456) in Juab County, Utah. Fieldwork was conducted by the Utah Museum of Natural History in cooperation with the University of Utah Archaeological Center. Located at Fish Springs National Wildlife Refuge (FSNWR) in Utah's West Desert, Fish Springs Station is an open, stratified historic and prehistoric site. Archaeological investigations revealed a Fremont occupation probably dating between A.D. 580 and A.D. 1300. A historic stone foundation and associated artifacts were also exposed. The majority of historic artifacts recovered in association with the stone foundation date between the last quarter of the nineteenth century and the first quarter of the twentieth century. Consequently, the exposed structural foundation is most likely the remains of the John J. Thomas ranch house and not the Fish Springs Pony Express Station.
