Oral history interview by Kathleen Irving with Beth Sweatfield. Topics include: Parents, siblings, and growing up on a ranch in Wyoming; Beginning her nurse studies at the University of Wyoming; Moving to Ogden when WWII broke out and training at the Dee Memorial Hospital; Graduating from the University of Utah; Joining the Nurse Cadets during the War; Living in the dormitory building; Work and school schedules; the graduation rate because of the rigorous program; Working in all areas of the hospital; Moving to Vernal after graduation to be with her family; Meeting her future husband in the Uintah County hospital which was located in an Episcopal Parish House; The culture shock of moving to a small rural hospital and their peculiar practices; Being on the committee to build a new hospital; Different nurses that came and went during her nursing employment; Having to evacuate patients when a fire broke out in the old hospital roof; Various emergency situations with patients; The emotional difficulty of patients' death; The birth of her children; Being a working mother; Taking a break from nursing and working with the County Commision to supervise school food programs; Traveling to conventions; Being in Washington, D. C. when Nixon resigned and Ford was sworn in; Being asked to teach a licensed practical nurse program in Roosevelt at the Uintah Basin Area Vocational Center; The difficulty of developing a curriculum; partnering with both hospitals for clinical work; Retirement; Spending time with family, Activity in clubs; Traveling with friends; and being in Florida when the Space Shuttle blew up |
