Further Information |
The front of the photograph is free from handwritten marks, but shows a clear indentation of Jackson's name written across the top from the backside. The photograph looks like it has been replicated due to its grainy texture. The back of the photograph is in poor condition as it appears to have been torn from a photograph album. Written marks include: "Sheldon Jackson" written across the top under a layer of glued paper. And the number, "15" written in pen below. The condition of the photograph is poor. The edges are either worn or torn and there is major tear on the bottom right hand corner of the photograph that is visible when viewed from the front. Jackson was a major factor in the Presbyterian movement in the Rocky Mountains and in Alaska. He founded many churches and took a particular interest in church schools which led to the creation of Sheldon Jackson College on November 14, 1895 later changed to Westminster College on February 6, 1902. While traveling and proselytizing throughout Alaska in the late 1870s, Dr. Sheldon Jackson collected many Alaskan Native artifacts. Some of these artifacts were later donated to Westminster College by Jackson himself in the 1890s and early 1900s. A portion of these artifacts are displayed in the main lobby of the Giovale Library and the second level lobby, while the rest of the collection is stored in the Archives. The Giovale Library Archives includes a small collection, mostly correspondence, of materials relating to Dr. Sheldon Jackson. |
