Subject aging; optic neuropathy
Description Histopathologic studies have demonstrated a loss of optic nerve axons with increasing age in the normal human optic nerve. The magnitude of this age-related axonal loss appears to be between 0.1%- 0.5% per year, and the clinical relevancy ofthis finding in the general population has been debated. For patients with compromised optic nerves, an aging-related loss of axonal fibers may become clinically significant.
