Mormon Battalion encampment taken in 1896. Copy of old photo. (Aug. 30, 1966). Veteran labeled No. 9 is Private Charles Brent Hancock (seated, with book). Veteran labeled No. 18 is Orin Hatch. According to an oral history from John Russell Hatch, these two men were related. Orin's great-grandmother was Mary Stearns Hatch and her brother was Isaac Stearns V who is Addison Pratt's great-grandfather. Both families originally came from Winchester, New Hampshire and knew each other well. Both men were present at the discovery of gold in California, and also helped rescue the Donner party. |
